David Plouffe, architect of the Obama campaign, was surprised that Obama insisted on naming Senator Hillary Clinton to his short list of vice-presidential candidates. In the end, the unpredictable dynamism of Bill Clinton prevented her from becoming VP, but not Secretary of State.
